Stackhats

I was doing a bit of bike spotting out of my new window at work today, and something made me smile. It seems a couple of our friendly bike couriers have donned the old Rosebank Stackhat. I think we were in Grade 3 when our parent were encouraged to get us all one. I loved my old Stackhat for about the first half hour. I thought we looked a bit “Tron” in them. Then Matt and I headbutted each other until my inner foam cracked…. Good times. We soon disovered they became extremely hot and heavy in summer and generally pretty uncool. As soon as I was out of sight from Mum, it would spend the rest of it’s life stashed in a bush somewhere near home.

They do look pretty cool and retro today on the couriers. Although I haven’t seen an orange one yet. Classic white, all the way…

Did you all have Stackhats back in the day, and if you did, which colour?

I never had a bike helmet until I moved into Hawthorn. We were reckless as kids. Or maybe our parents didn’t cae enough about us?
Either way, I always felt sorry for the kids who had to wear them, because they looked like dorks.
BTW, how is it that you have time to watch couriers, and not time to email me, about nothing worthwhile… Jeez, man!

I had a full-on helmet, like a bowl (that weighed a freakin ton), like you see on some horse riding types. Not the velvety brown or black things, but white high density fibreglass type things. I’ve gone over the top of two cars, jumped inumerable (?sp) objects/lengths on my racer, but only ever hit my head when I was wearing a helmet. And stackhats were cool in comparison to my thing.
And you never send me an email either, bitch.

(not that I ever send you one, and I use the above term in the most endearing, affectionate way possible)

I had the egg yolk yellow. I loved it. I discovered that if I wore a peaked baseball style hat underneath it looked as though I had a Rebel speeder-bike helmet from Endor. That was sweet.

Grunski:  Beeeeeeeeeeeeyaaaaaaaaaarrrrch!

Lex:  I can sooo see you doing that!  Is that when you developed your Speeder Bike like cornering style?

Gizo:  I’m going to look for one on ebay for you.

The good news is they bought me a larger LCD monitor at work. The bad news is I have my back to my boss a lot of the time. So sneaky emails are kept to a minimum. Sorry guys.

Yeah, I had one of these. Orange? I wish. Yellow? Not even close. White? If only. Nope. My stackhat was bright frikken fluro green. So not only did I look like a mushroom, I looked like a mushroom that had just stacked into a load of TMNT mutagen ooze. I had to stack on weight and get braces, just to detract from my helmet (at least, that’s the story I’m sticking with anyway).
And yeah, those things were hot as hell in the summer.
I recently tried to put mine on when I visited my parents. Lucky I checked under the lining inside first, otherwise I might have had the extra protection of a layer of white-tail spiders to go with the foam.

Give me an old cool bicycle, and I’ll ride around the city for days.
