Over the last couple of years you couldn’t read a mtb mag without stumbling upon an article on Singlespeed bikes, usually with the author being new to the idea and a new convert by the end of the piece. I’d always think ‘one day…. ‘. Having wore out my middle chainring and cassette for a second time from commuting everyday on the hardtail, I reached a crossroad. I could fork over another $200 for a fresh set, or say hell with it and go single. The commute from Yarraville until you reach the CBD is flat anyway, and I was only ever using 3 gears at the most. With it no longer being my only mountain bike I thought it was probably worth a shot.
Having ridden it for over twelve months now both on and off road I think I have an idea what it’s about. I won’t get into the whole Zen bullshit about being one with the bike and trail, I haven’t gone out and got any gnarly tattoos, and I’m not rejecting the marketing campaigns for the latest expensive bits of bling for your bike – For what I can afford, I’m still an enthusiastic consumer when it comes to riding.
It’s a number of things to me. I love the quiet ride you get from the fixed chain, and how stiff & light your bike becomes once you remove both deraileuers, cables, the cassette and shifterpods.
But the thing that’s stayed with me since my first ride to work, is that it’s just like I’m riding my BMX to school again. Being in a higher gear you pedal harder from the lights, rocking your handlebars from side to side to build up speed, and riding down the hill on LaTrobe St past Telstra Dome I can only coast and take in the view, just like I would have on the BMX. The riding isn’t constant. You’re out of the saddle a lot more and the same 7km route to work everyday doesn’t get boring, it’s just fun.

I went for my first ride, yesterday. It was only 4kms, but I had to work hard during parts of it, and was absolutely shagged by the end of it. My legs were all wobbly, and I felt like hurling several times, but I did enjoy it. I’ll give it another crack tonight…
Comment by gruntski September 20, 2006 @ 9:23 amIt certainly is the flavour of day. I’ve only been to a few bikeshops over here and at the mention of a hardtail back in Oz, I’ve already had two salespeople suggest I should convert it to singlespeed.
Although I haven’t tried it, I can totally understand it. Simplicity is a nice way to go sometimes. I remember how clean the lines of your bike looked without all the clutter of sprockets and cables.
I’m very tempted to try it out on the Norco when we get back. My only reservation is that if I remove the derailers and shifters, I lose the only XTR I have ever, and will ever own.
Glad to hear it’s taking you back to good ol’ days. You must have quads of steel!
Comment by antman September 20, 2006 @ 9:35 amIn honour of your post, I drove my car as a single speed all the way to work today.

Comment by seebs September 20, 2006 @ 11:01 amMate I can totally understand your XTR dilemma. That’s a bit of bling I’ll never have…
Comment by seebs September 20, 2006 @ 11:14 amCouldn’t agree more. I’ll soon be bolting some assorted parts together into a dedicated commuter for my croydon to ashburton trip. It may be SS. Or it might end up with a butchered cassette making it 3 or 4 speed, since I have another SS (in pieces at the moment) already.
Comment by book boy September 20, 2006 @ 12:09 pmSorted, Bookboy. Hey, we have to ride soon!
Comment by seebs September 20, 2006 @ 1:54 pmCall me ignoramus (I do all the time) but what is the difference between a cluster and a cassette?
Comment by gruntski September 20, 2006 @ 2:13 pmApples…
Comment by seebs September 20, 2006 @ 2:59 pmThat was a serious question. For once.
Comment by gruntski September 20, 2006 @ 7:20 pmApples matey, they’re the same thing. Just a different name for it, that’s all. How was your ride tonight?
